Build a coal plan
Flame is visually dramatic, but a stable coal bed does most of the useful work. Burn clean, dry fuel early enough to create depth, then maintain a smaller active fire beside the cooking zone.
Use tools with reach and control
Pliers, rakes, shovels, gloves, and a stable landing surface let the cook move fuel without improvising. Tool length should match the hearth while preserving tactile control.
End colder than you think
Spread coals, extinguish completely where required, check surrounding soil and equipment, and transport ash only in an appropriate metal container. Local bans and land rules override the menu.
