Design around the trip
Vehicle access, group size, weather, fire restrictions, water, and length of stay determine the kitchen. A cast-iron oven can be ideal at base camp and absurd in a backpack. Start with constraints before choosing equipment.
Separate the work zones
Create distinct places for raw preparation, cooking, clean service, washing, and waste. A stable table, hand-washing setup, covered food storage, and a clear hot zone usually improve the meal more than another specialty gadget.
Plan the failure modes
Carry a legal backup fuel system, ignition redundancy, repair materials, safe water treatment, and enough capacity to secure food from weather and animals. Extinguishing water and a cold-fire check belong in the cooking plan.
