Before everyone needs something

The pleasant version has steam rising from a mug and a quiet view through the trees. The other version has the coffee ready, the mugs missing, and the person who packed them still asleep. Most mornings fall somewhere between the two.

Put the kit in order before bed, storing food and scented items as the site requires. Find the mugs. Decide where the hot pot will sit and count the people who want coffee. One small brewer can be lovely for one person and a fairly slow way to make friends with six.

Make the coffee you know

If you already make coffee you like at home, bring that method with you where practical. Practice with the exact camp equipment first. A cold morning is a poor time to discover that the new brewer has an important little piece you left on the drying rack.

Pre-portion the coffee if it helps, keep paper filters dry, and try pouring from the pot you’ll carry. Grind beans outside if that’s a part of the morning you enjoy. If it isn’t, ground coffee is allowed to come camping too.

Water first, then coffee

Plan potable water before planning the coffee. A travel brewer is not water-treatment equipment, and the fact that a drink is hot does not establish that unsafe source water has been treated correctly. Follow current treatment guidance for the water you use.

Use a heat source permitted at that location and follow the maker’s outdoor-use instructions. Heat the water in the vessel intended for that job. Some equipment marketed for outdoor coffee—including Hario’s metal V60 dripper—is explicitly not made to sit on a stove or fire.

After the last cup

Collect grounds and used filters for proper disposal. They are food waste, not an improvement to the stream bank. Keep the camp’s washing area and water source separate, and follow the land manager’s rules for waste and wildlife storage.

Then sit for a minute. Look at the weather and talk through the route and turnaround time before everyone starts packing. Drink the coffee while it’s hot. You went to some trouble to make it.
