Start with safe water and stable heat

Filter or treat water for the source, then heat it on a stable stove with adequate ventilation. Wind protection must follow the stove maker’s instructions; enclosing a canister incorrectly can overheat it.

Match the brewer to the group

A pour-over is compact and controlled for one or two people. A larger press or batch brewer may be more efficient for a group. Count filters, vessels, fuel, water, and cleanup—not just the brewer’s packed size.

Grind and dose before the weather decides

Pre-dose beans at home when appropriate, protect a grinder from moisture, and use a repeatable coffee-to-water ratio. A scale increases consistency, but a marked scoop and vessel can provide a robust low-power fallback.

Pack out the grounds

Coffee grounds are food waste and can attract animals. Cool them, contain them, and follow the site’s disposal rules. Do not scatter grounds simply because they are plant material.
