Baskets protect shape and airflow
A rigid basket can protect fragile mushrooms and greens from crushing while allowing ventilation. It is less convenient in dense terrain and takes more pack space, so match it to the harvest and route.
Mesh and canvas solve different jobs
Mesh provides airflow and low weight but limited protection. Waxed canvas carries tools and tolerates abrasion but should include breathable specimen separation. Waterproof roll-top bags are valuable for references and electronics, not fresh damp mushrooms.
A harvest knife should be maintainable
A short controllable edge, protective sheath, visible construction, and a brush can support clean mushroom harvest. Hori hori and sickle tools suit different legal garden or field tasks. Clean soil and moisture from every blade before storage.
Unknown specimens stay separate
Carry paper bags or ventilated compartments for uncertain specimens and label habitat, substrate, time, and location. Never allow an unidentified specimen to mix with food intended for the table.
