Carry references and uncertainty
Use current regional references, record habitat and substrate, and keep uncertain specimens separate. A photograph or app can support observation but should not be the sole basis for eating a wild plant or fungus.
Choose containers for the organism
Breathable baskets or mesh help many mushrooms shed spores and avoid crushing. Waxed canvas handles tools and rough ground. Waterproof sacks protect notebooks and electronics but can trap moisture around fresh specimens.
Harvest lightly and legally
Know land ownership, permits, protected species, local limits, and contamination risks. Take only what you can use, leave reproductive structures and habitat intact where appropriate, and clean tools between sensitive sites.
